Web 3.0 - The Future of Web

We have seen numerous of sites that came up during the uprising of Web 2.0 era. Social Networking, blogs, forums, wikis etc, Web 2.0 came along with applications and websites that were user customizable, easy to use and were brought to live by the contribution of the users itself. Based on "The Radical Trust", the internet users added, edited, shared and did much more to the global databases and could access them through their mobile phones, notebooks, net-books etc. But, just imagine, wouldn't that be great if there could be an application that could easily deliver what we are really expecting, which could make decisions on the basis of our tastes and likeness to bring to us the best results? Imagine a search engine that could reply to your open question like - "Where should I have dinner tonight?" Yes. This is the new generation of the internet - Web 3.0.

Understanding Web 2.0

Web 2.0 has really been a big buzzword in the previous years. Enormous number of applications were developed which users could customize according to their requirements and needs. Making Internet as a Platform was one of the leading revolutions of the Web 2.0. Some of the other characteristics of Web 2.0 are:

  • Collaboration: Collaboration, sharing, hyper linking were one of the foundation criterias underlying the success of various Web 2.0 sites. Users added new contents are bound in to the structure of the web by other users discovering the content and linking to it. With associations becoming stronger through repetition or intensity, the web of connections grew organically as an output of the collective activity of all web users.
  • Non-confinement to a single device: Web 2.0 applications were not confined to be limited to a single device but to be made available on Various platforms like laptop, mobile etc. This lead the user to use the benefits of the same web-application even on the go on any platform

More on it can be read in our article - Understanding Web 2.0.

What is Web 3.0?!

Its too early to be too sure of what Web 3.0 is gonna be like. Its not even sure whether we have seen a stagnation point in Web 2.0 applications as every new day we come across a brand new application that is going to become the coolest app in the future. It still seems that Web 2.0 has a very long way to go. But as Web 3.0 buzzword also started to buzz up, there is a little feeling that we really are going to experience a new era of the web very soon. In Web 3.0, we might see something called - The Semantic Web, the term phrased by the inventor of World Wide Web - Tim Berners-Lee. He defined the Semantic Web as a place where machines can read, interpret and conclude web pages much as the way humans can, where search engines can reckon the numerous pages to deliver "what we are looking for" on the internet.

Here's an example. "Suppose you want to go for a vacation in a tropical destination during upcoming week's holiday. You also want to go for sight seeing on some distant island from the shore. You want an accommodation that is economic and want to make sure you can get some real good sea food in your vacations."

Now one obvious thing you can do is break up the above characteristics you want to have in your vacation and start your searching from a tropical destination with a distant island available for sight seeing. You will look for hotels with economic accommodations and check their for their sea food menu. It will take about 2-3 hours of your time in these respective searches and coming to decision on the best possible choices from those search results.

The Future of Search

In Web 3.0 search engine, instead of multiple search, you can type in one or two complex sentences in your browser and the next generation search engine will do the rest for you. In this case, you may type in - "I want to go to a tropical destination having a distant island for sight seeing next week. I want an economic accommodation with nice sea food in their cuisine. What are my options?" The Web 3.0 search engine will analyze your response, look out for all possible answers on the internet, and then display the organized the results on your browser with their ratings.

Web 3.0 Decision Making

Unlike Web 2.0, Web 3.0 will learn from your responses. It will calculate your tastes, your likes and dislikes, your expectations on the basis of your past inputs, searches, blogs etc and will deliver you the best possible result through the knowledge acquired about you. The more you use the web, the more it will learn about you and in the end, you may be typing in open questions like "Which movie should i watch tonight?" The Web 3.0 search engine will seek and reckon from its records and on the basis of your likes-dislikes and current locations, the Web 3.0 search engine will display you the best results - your genre of movie in a theater nearby you.

This is where the web is moving towards. We are yet to see what Web 3.0 will contain in its box. Keep watching this space for more.

Web 3.0 ideology is not really like what you think of. The semantic tech. in my prediction only available in v4.0 or later.

v3.0 should be all about how you can gain information the fastest way via human response (real time search engine). Example. you go on google and search for let say "What happen in Japan now?". At the same time use whois in Japan can reponse to the query via real time reponse through thier mobile or even chat room. or even the google itself have a function to do this.

This means everything can be indexed faster with almost real time result without having to wait for the information to be posted over a web or forum.

I can only see semantic search engine technology can only be applied after they implement a real time response so that the result for semantic search can be matched with live real time response.
