Getting your website on top of a Search Engine is not the only way to drive traffic to your site. I do agree that search engine optimization do help, but its not the only way to get traffic. With the rapid increasing growth of social websites, its important that you must pay proper attention to these website to get some piece of cake.
What makes Social Traffic?
I have seen a lot of people are confused about what exactly makes social traffic. Social traffic is made up of many things. Social traffic generates from social media, like blogs, forums, social networking sites like facebook, myspace, twitter and many bookmarking sites like StumbleUpon, Del.Icio.Us, Digg, Reddit and web directories such as DMOZ, yahoo directory and amazon reviews. Any Traffic that you obtain from this site is called social Traffic. Its because of the users of the websites facebook and Digg that liked your website and made the choice to link to your website.
How to generate Social Traffic?
If we are clear from where Social Traffic comes from, Now we will discuss how we can generate it for our website.
Understand what will make People come back to your site
What matters most is ensuring people that they have left your site with the intention to come back. If you can provide them with what they ask for, Social website will increase your traffic and will help you converting your site to a online profit. You should think about: Why those people will bookmark your website or link to your website?
Know about the market of your site
If you know what part of the market your represent and collect opinion on what people may or may not want in your market.
Use Twitter
Tweet about your article/blog. Let your followers know about new articles. Do not spam by re-submitting it in a short time. Always use Hashtags to get retweeted. For example #seo will get you retweeted by @seoborg @SEOHattery and @hashstats. Similarly #wordpress will be retweeted by @hashwp @hashwordpress and @pimpmywordpress. Share useful articles and links that you come across with others, retweet what you find valuable. Use Tweetmeme - a plugin to get your articles tweeted and to show how many tweets it gets.
Be a member of a reputable social network
It will help a lot in increasing your customer database and site traffic. Through social networking, you can connect to people in related fields, and potential clients looking for the product or service your business offers.
Use Eye-Catching Headlines
Use words that instantly catches readers attention. It should be clear and short. The tips works for all kind of social traffic. Your headline must be different from all the other sites, and with eye catching headlines, you make a person stop whatever he's doing just to make him read more of your post.
Make a video or create a video blog
The best place to broadcast is You Tube, the most popular video sharing site. A video blog, has a collection of videos - your own or your favorites. It’s easy to create and it’s a great way to get more exposure to your website and to increase web traffic.

I recently installed the Tweetmeme plugin & have found that it helps in increasing the number of views.
Eye-catching headlines are also important. It allows the reader the decision of whether to click on your article of not.
Have not tried using hashtags to get my blog retweeted though. May just try it... :)

Have personally tried using Tweetmeme recently & it has resulted in higher traffic as it gives others the chance to tweet the article if they find it useful & like it.

Relying on search engine alone to bring traffic to site is not enough. In search engines, we are not in control. Google may deindex our site without good reason at all. In social networking sites, we have the control since we can see the results immediately.
Well the information is quite useful but probably you have just explained twitter... wouldnt it be better if you can share your view and knowledge on other social media?
